After Elizabeth Freeman bravely gained her freedom in court, she went to work for the Sedgwick family, even though John Ashley begged her to return to him. Freeman ended up staying with the Sedgwick’s as their housekeeper for many years.[23] Elizabeth was very compassionate and skilled at taking care of the four children and her master and his mistress, Susan Sedgwick, but this time for pay.[24] Elizabeth went beyond just taking care of the children. Even when Elizabeth Freeman bought her own house, she was still considered a member of the Sedgwick family.[25] Elizabeth was also known for being a “much sought-after nurse” and a midwife.[26] Her first husband died in war, leaving her as a widow with one daughter.[27] However, in the late 1780s, she met Jack Burghardt, who she later married in 1790.[28] Elizabeth died when she was about eight-five on December 28, 1829.[29]
